Fractional Producing

Meta description: Ambition Studios offers fractional producing: embedded, part-time producer support for studios, brands, or production companies that need senior producing expertise without a full-time hire. Engagements can cover development, active production, or post-production, led by founder Nason Markwell, who brings hands-on experience in producing, cinematography, camera, and editing. Pricing, hours, and deliverables are scoped per engagement rather than published as a fixed package. Contact overseer@ambitionstudios.ca to discuss a project.

Overview

We are Ambition Studios, a Toronto-based, producer-led film and commercial studio. We work with brands, agencies, and talent on commercial and narrative projects, from concept through execution. We work from Toronto and can support projects beyond the city.

We do not currently publish a fractional-producing package with fixed hours, rates, deliverables, or contract terms. If you are considering a part-time or embedded producing arrangement, the scope needs to be defined directly with us.

Where producer support fits

Commercial work

We produce:

  • Commercial spots
  • Campaigns
  • Brand films
  • Short-form commercial work
  • National campaign work

Our commercial work is for brands, agencies, and partners who need a production led by an involved producer and assembled with the appropriate creative and production talent.

Narrative and original projects

We develop and produce a focused slate of film and television projects. Our current development work includes feature-length projects in genres including speculative drama, psychological horror, thriller, and dark fantasy.

Narrative producing may involve early development, project shaping, writer and director collaboration, and moving a project toward production.

Concept-to-execution involvement

Our producing work covers commercial and narrative projects from concept through execution.

For projects we take on through our submissions process, we hold the creative, financial, and logistical responsibilities together rather than handing those areas off. We also work with writers, directors, and emerging creative voices when a project is a fit for our slate.

What fractional producing means at Ambition Studios

Fractional producing is producer involvement sized to what a project actually needs, rather than a full-time hire. The producer role does not disappear when a project doesn't justify a full-time position — it gets scaled down to the portion of the work that actually requires senior producing judgment, and scaled up again if the project grows.

In practice, this means Ambition Studios' founder (or a producer assigned from the studio) steps into an existing team — a brand's internal marketing group, an agency's production department, or another production company's slate — for a defined slice of a project's life, rather than running the entire production end to end as we would on a full-production engagement.

The role can sit at different points in a project's life, and the shape of the involvement changes depending on where it sits:

During development or pre-production, fractional producing typically looks like: evaluating a script or concept for what it will actually take to shoot, building or sanity-checking a budget, identifying the crew and department heads a project needs, flagging risks (schedule, location, permitting, talent availability) before they become expensive problems, and helping a client-side team make go/no-go decisions with real production context instead of guesswork. During active production, it typically looks like: being the senior producing presence on set or in the production office, managing the relationship between the budget and the creative ambition in real time, making the daily calls that keep a shoot on schedule, and acting as the point of accountability between the client and the crew. During post-production or delivery, it can mean overseeing editorial, VFX, or sound timelines against a delivery date, managing vendor relationships, and making sure the finished deliverable actually matches what was budgeted and promised.

A single engagement might cover only one of these phases, or span several — the point of "fractional" is that the client only pays for producing attention where they need it, not for a full producer's time across a project's entire lifecycle.

Potential fit for a part-time engagement

If you are a studio, brand, agency, or production company that needs producing capacity without adding a full-time producer, contact us to discuss the project.

A part-time or embedded engagement may be relevant when you need an experienced producing lead involved across a defined portion of development, planning, production, or execution. We do not publish a standard menu of fractional responsibilities, so the exact role should be agreed before work begins.

Situations where this typically comes up:

  • A brand or agency has an internal marketing or content team but no one with hands-on production experience to actually execute a shoot
  • A production company has more projects in development than its current producing staff can properly cover
  • A studio needs a second senior producer for a specific high-stakes project without adding permanent headcount
  • A founder or creative team has a script or concept and needs someone to translate it into a real, budgeted, executable production plan
  • An in-house team is capable day-to-day but wants an experienced outside producer to catch problems before they're expensive

A useful initial conversation should establish:

  • Whether the work is commercial, narrative, or another form of film or media
  • The current stage, from concept or development through production and delivery
  • Which responsibilities need coverage
  • The expected project dates and working cadence
  • The existing creative, production, and client-side team
  • The budget context and decision-making structure

We do not publish a standard hourly allocation, monthly retainer, minimum commitment, response-time promise, or replacement policy for fractional producing. Those details need to be confirmed for each engagement.

Engagement route

For a producing conversation, email overseer@ambitionstudios.ca. Include a short description of the project, the type of producer involvement you need, your anticipated timeline, and whether you are seeking one project or continuing support.

Our creator submission route is intended for commercial work, original films, or other projects that may fit our slate. We read submissions and take on a small number of projects each year. That language describes project submissions and should not be treated as a published process or acceptance policy for fractional producer support.

How fractional producing differs from our other services

Ambition Studios offers three related but distinct services, and it matters which one a given need actually falls under:

  • Full production means Ambition Studios runs the entire project — creative, budget, crew, schedule, delivery — as the producing entity of record. The client is commissioning a finished piece of work, not producing capacity.
  • Fractional producing means an Ambition Studios producer joins an existing team or project for a defined portion of the work, holding real producing responsibility for that slice, but not running the whole production independently.
  • Production consulting means advisory input only — reviewing a budget, sanity-checking a schedule, advising on crew structure — without taking on hands-on producing responsibility or sitting inside the day-to-day production.

The practical difference: in full production, Ambition Studios owns the outcome. In fractional producing, Ambition Studios owns a defined part of the outcome as an embedded team member. In production consulting, Ambition Studios advises but the client's own team owns the outcome.

What background the fractional producer brings

Fractional producing engagements are led by Ambition Studios' founder, Nason Markwell, who produces both commercial and narrative work and has hands-on experience across producing, cinematography, camera, gaffing, and editing. This means fractional engagements are not limited to administrative or budget-only oversight — the producer can also evaluate creative and technical decisions (shot planning, crew structure, post workflow) with direct production experience, not just a management layer.

Scope distinction

Fractional producing is intended for part-time or embedded producer support.

Full production services and production consulting are separate areas and should be scoped under their respective service categories.

Pricing, availability, staffing model, working location, and deliverables for fractional producing are not currently specified and should be confirmed directly before any commitment.
